"A quality school library is kid friendly and student focused."
At present, a teacher librarian is employed to work for a period of time each week, dependent on the number of classes the school has. A teacher-librarian holds a recognised teaching qualification AND qualifications in librarianship, with curriculum and pedagogy knowledge combined with library and information management knowledge.
There is a concern that with the implementation of Local School Local Decisions some out-of-touch Principals may choose to do away with the valuable support of a Teacher Librarian and hire someone simply to operate the library. According to much research including, Australian research,it has been shown that the school library plays a critical role in supporting student learning. L. Why do I always sign off with this little message? It is not just that I feel it is very important ....One of the KEY FINDINGS of the Parliamentary Inquiry into School Libraries was “Free voluntary reading is the best predictor of comprehension, vocabulary growth, spelling and grammatical ability and writing style.” M.Lonsdale, Impact of School Libraries on Student Achievement. ACER, 2003.
