I so loved the concept I just had to share this fabulous tradition with you, below, from Karen's guest post Thankful Thursday. Education & Teachers. on Denyse Whelan's blog.

"...Every school year has a Last Day as well. In the evening of the Last Day I send my husband and kids out to buy dinner while I very quickly blu-tac up a selection of their work, photos and awards from the year gone by. I set the table for dinner and just as I hear the family returning I put on some loud music and meet the kids at the door with blindfolds.

They put them on and enjoy dancing around the house until they arrive at the dinner table where they remove the blindfolds and spend a few seconds in awed silence as their memories are revealed, spread out in triumph on the wall.

Then they scoff their dinner and relive the year that was. It’s the best fun ever and a night that the kids look forward to all year."

John Dewey has stated, “We do not learn from experience…we learn from reflecting on experience.”

I believe that this is a wonderful activity for all students to undertake and what makes it even more special is when it is done as a family. Reflecting is a very important skill that allows the person reflecting to develop deep meaning and understanding.

Most people would agree, in order to continually learn and improve, individuals need to engage in regular reflection.

Two questions that you could prompt your children with include:
What do you notice?
What do you feel?

Have fun and if you implement this activity with your children let me know how it goes.

Better Start for Children with Disabilities

[Better Start for Children with Disabilities] This package was announced in the last budget and came into effect on July 1. Similar to the Helping Children with Autism package, but encompasses a wider range of disabilities. The bulk of the package is for kids aged 6 and under, but there are some offerings for kids up to 13.

Children with one of the listed disabilities will also be able to access new Medicare items under the Better Start for Children with Disability (Better Start) initiative.

The Better Start initiative includes the following components:

Funding for early intervention services and treatments for eligible children
Additional assistance for eligible children who live in outer-regional, rural or remote locations to help with the costs of accessing services
A Medicare item for the development of a treatment and management plan for eligible children up to the age of 13
Medicare items for up to four allied health diagnostic services, the results of which contribute to the development of the treatment and management plan, and
Medicare items for up to 20 relevant allied health services in total for each eligible child up to the age of 15 provided the treatment and management plan is in place before the age of 13.

Our kids deserve to be safe!!

RE: Submissions due by Friday 23rd September to School Bus Safety Community Advisory Committee

Thousands of children are being hurt, maimed and sometimes killed, simply because they don't have a lap/sash or 3-point seat belt on their school bus - even when travelling on high speed, high risk roads and highways.

Safety is a high priority these days and we know seat belts save lives, so to prevent injuries and deaths on our roads, children on buses must be able to buckle up too.

Very exciting news!!

The report on the Inquiry into School Libraries and Teacher Librarians in Australia has been tabled in Parliament.

Youcan take a look at the Federal Government’s new report on schoollibraries and teacher librarians in Australian schools on the House ofRepresentatives’ website http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/ee/schoollibraries/report/fullreport.pdf.

Launchingthe report in May this year, Amanda Rishworth MP said: “The committee wasstruck by the passion and enthusiasm that teacher librarians have for theirprofession. We hope that this report goes some way toward highlighting theissues faced by school libraries and teacher librarians, and showcases thevaluable contributions that they make to educational outcomes in schools acrossAustralia.”

TheAustralian Library and Information Association and Australian School LibraryAssociation have created a Facebook page where we’d love you to express your support for school libraries and share anystories about how a teacher librarian has helped you, your family or your class.

What a difference a school library makes

This is the basis for a campaign by library associations and teacher librarians to bring parents into the discussion about the future of school libraries.

The 10-point checklist for parents

* There is a qualified teacher librarian managing the library
* The library is open whenever the school is open
* Students learn information processing skills in the school library
* Students can borrow the resources they need, when they need them
* There aren’t long waiting lists for popular fiction
* There’s more than enough space for a whole class to fit into the library
* There is high speed access to the internet
* Students are encouraged to use online electronic resources, not just Google
* There are special activities eg for Book Week, the Premier’s Reading Challenge
* Your child thinks the library is ‘awesome’

Althoughthe report spoke very positively about the benefits of employing qualifiedteacher librarians in school libraries, the sad fact is that not all schoolsare prepared to make the investment and even if they were, there are aren’tenough of us to go round. We need morepeople coming into the profession and more principals and school boards ofmanagement as enlightened as our own.

NAPLAN testing is almost here....Help your kids

The 2011 NAPLAN tests will be held on Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May

NAPLAN is a valuable tool for governments, schools and parents to understand and improve the literacy and numeracy outcomes of Australian students.

NAPLAN provides parents with a report on how well their child is performing in literacy and numeracy against the national average, and schools and teachers use NAPLAN data to improve teaching and learning in the classroom.

NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress.

As a parent or carer of a student participating in NAPLAN, you can best help your child before the tests by ensuring they have a good nights sleep.

Most children need 10-11 hours sleep a night. They’re usually tired after school and might look forward to bedtime A good night’s sleep is important for school children’s growth and development.
Sleep deprivation has serious consequences. This is because a lot of activity takes place in the body and the brain during sleep. For example, when it’s dark, our bodies produce extra melatonin to grow and repair cells and muscle tissues. Our bodies start to feel sleepy in response to the melatonin. Why Your Child Should Read at least 20 Minutes Every Night

Let's figure it out--mathematically!
At the start of school:
Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week;
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night...or not at all!

1st: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.

Student A reads 20 minutes x 5 times a week = 100 mins./week
Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes

2nd: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.

Student A reads 400 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

3rd: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year.

Student A reads 3600 minutes in a school year.
Student B reads 720 minutes in a school year.

Student A practices reading the equivalent of ten whole school days a year.
Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice.

By the end of 6th grade, if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits,

Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days.
Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.

One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance. How do you think Student B will feel about him/herself as a student?

Think about it:

Handipoints (HandiLand) is a virtual space for families where kids' everyday ‘real world’ chores earn them big prizes and new adventures in a safe online environment that is controlled and monitored by parents.

Virtual worlds are online spaces where kids create avatars (kind of like cartoon characters) through which they communicate, socialize, learn, shop, play games, and generally express themselves. There are hundreds of virtual worlds on the Web aimed at users of all ages. Some aimed at young children have controlled text chat, "profanity filters" to block offensive or sexually related chat, and staff or contractors moderating user behaviour – you'll want to check for these safety features. Parents also need to know that there are worlds kids can find and access which are not designed for them.

Unlike other children’s Web sites, Handipoints joins offline tasks, such as cleaning their room and brushing their teeth, with online entertainment and games to teach children the value of their work and foster good behaviour. While they’re having fun, children learn about saving money and building responsible habits - and parents get a helping hand with positive reinforcement that is educational at the same time.”

Kids can walk around the virtual world and talk to each other using canned chat- they choose statements from a list instead of typing them. This stops inappropriate or bullying behaviour. The graphics are impressive and the functionality is rather sophisticated. HandiLand combines a fun virtual world for children with tools to teach responsibility, which should make it a favorite with the parents who actually decide which sites to introduce their young ones to. The site is free to use and parents who don’t want to spend money can choose to only use only virtual rewards.

There's a new My School Site

The NSW Department of Education and Training Director-General, Michael Coutts-Trotter, explains what's new in version two of the My School website.

The new site provides more information about Australia's almost 10,000 schools, including financial details such as income and capital expenditure.

It will also provide information about student progress based on the results of the 2008 and 2010 National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests.

My School, which is administered by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), was first released in 2010.

(ACARA) is the independent authority responsible for the development of a national curriculum, a national assessment program and a national data collection and reporting program that supports 21st century learning for all Australian students.

ACARA’s work is carried out in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including teachers, principals, governments, State and Territory education authorities, professional education associations, community groups and the general public.

They need to access any photos of themselves and their friends, awards or certificates that may have received over their years at school, any works of art or craft, any favourite books or music they used to enjoy, any workbooks from school that you may have treasured.........

They will need to make a digital copy of each of these- either scan them or take a digital photo of them so we can work with them in the different software that they will be using.

While on leave, I had the opportunity to work in my son’s school canteen and as a parent helper within the classroom changing home readers. I had been aware for a long time of the immense benefit to teachers of having parents able to offer their time to help in the classroom but had until now not seen things from the other side. If you are already helping out around the school, you will understand the joy of helping others and seeing how happy the students are to have their parents around the place helping out. If you have some spare time in your week, why not see if you can help out around the school in some way.

Parent helpers are one of the greatest resources a school can have – with many benefits for the school and for the parents who volunteer. I have come up with the following benefits – have you experienced others?

Benefits for School:

* Able to contribute to better prepared, more individualised programs for students

* Able to offer better services and facilities to our students and community (eg uniforms etc)

* An active parent body is an essential part of a vibrant, positive school climate

* Children can display positive behabiours for their parents and carers who are actively involved in the school

Benefits for our Children:

* Children see parents and community members helping the school and they realise that it is important to all of us.

I could not run Sandy Beach Public School library without all the wonderful parent and grandparent helpers at SBPS.

I have parents who make library bags, parents who cover and repair books, parents who help by shelving and tidying the shelves, parents who help with creating designs, parents who assist at our annual bookfair.

They are invaluable!! Without their assistance I would not be able to offer as many services to our students and staff.

Reading 10 minutes per day from a very young age is a great investment.

Campaign for Quality School Libraries in Australia

A quality school library is kid friendly and student focused.
The school library is not just a storehouse run by a loans assistant, but a vital learning centre,
operating under the guidance of a dual-trained teacher-librarian*, in partnership with classroom
teachers.
Learning today means more than memorising facts. It means learning to learn for a lifetime. Savvy parents and educators know that the school library is key to teaching students not just to read but to practice the skills they need to seek, evaluate and use information throughout their lives. In fact, research shows those students from schools with professionally staffed, fully equipped libraries score higher on literacy and achievement tests.
Does your child's school library measure up?
• Is there a qualified teacher librarian? Is there adequate support staff?
• Does your child have access to the school library anytime during the day that he/she needs to use its resources? Does the library offer remote access from home via computer?
• Is the school library budget adequate to provide a full range of both print and electronic resources?
• Is the library central to the school’s literacy program?
• Are school administrators knowledgeable and supportive of the school library?
• Does the school provide ongoing training to support teachers and staff in learning about new technologies and integration of information skills?
• Are teachers encouraged to work with the teacher librarian to extend learning opportunities?
• Is there a process for ongoing evaluation of the school library?
Children cannot be educated to live and work in the 21st century using resources from the 1970s. Let your principal and school parent group and/or school board know of your
concerns. Work with your principal to ensure support for the school library program.
Get to know your teacher librarian. Ask what the needs are and how you can help. Offer to volunteer your time.
Foster the love of reading by promoting reading at home and by regularly visiting your local public library. Read together with your child.
Research shows that children who are read to in the home do better in school.

Support legislators who support libraries and education. Let them know you think the two go together and should be a high priority.

Inquiry into School Libraries and Teacher Librarians in Australian Schools
Unfortunately, in Australia, over the past 15 years, principal autonomy in staffing along with
inadequate budgets have led to the decline of qualified teacher librarians (TLs) in Victoria,
Tasmania, and the ACT. 50% of Tasmanian schools and ACT primary schools now have no TLs.
In Victoria this could now be as high as 87% of metropolitan primary schools. TLs are not
required in WA primary schools. In Queensland TLs may not be placed in the library. Seven
state high school libraries on the Gold Coast now do not have TLs. In South Australia 28% of
primary libraries have no TLs. In the NT only 5% of schools have qualified teacher librarians.
NSW is the only state still staffing trained teacher librarians in every school, but in primary
schools they are generally used for teacher relief time, diminishing their leadership and teaching
potential.
In March, Julia Gillard initiated a House Inquiry into School Libraries and Teacher Librarians.
Publication of the committee’s report has been interrupted by the election. After 382 submissions and hearings in every state and territory, the cross party House Committee on Education and Training chaired by Sharon Bird, MP, has come to grips with the complex issue of declining numbers of qualified teacher librarians in our state schools.
The loss of tertiary training programs, inadequate staffing budgets, lack of national standards,
ignorance of international research linking well-staffed and well-supported school libraries with
student literacy and learning and the loss of state school advisory services and their corporate
knowledge are just some of the causes identified in the hearings.
The report must be published. Recommendations must be acted upon. In this election, ask what
your candidates will do to facilitate this. After the election, ask your local federal and state member.
Every Australian student deserves a quality school library with a qualified teacher librarian.

Help spread the word by signing the petition "A Qualified Teacher Librarian in Every School."

The article states that "developers have begun pumping out applications specifically designed for users with special needs, and initial studies are already measuring the effectiveness of the iPod Touch and the iPad as learning tools for children with autism."

Ashley Harrell indicates that "through the devices, some of these children have been able to communicate their thoughts to adults for the first time. Others have learned life skills that had eluded them for years."

A study out of Australia (ADHD Is Associated With a ‘Western’ Dietary Pattern in Adolescents Journal of Attention Disorders first published on July 14, 2010)

suggests that a western diet ("Western diet" is shorthand for one that's heavy in processed sugars, fats, and starches; high in salt and meats; and low in fresh fruits and vegetables. The diseases long associated with it are diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer.)

may not just put kids' bodies at risk, but their brains.

Scientists from the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth, believe that eating a Western diet heightens the risk of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in kids.

School Sores (Impetigo)

A number of cases of School Sores have been reported to the school.

The symptoms are as follows:
•The sores can be anywhere on the body, but are often on the face near the mouth and nose, or on the arms and legs.
•Impetigo may starts with a blister or a group of blisters.
•The blister bursts leaving a patch of red, wet skin which weeps.
•The spot usually becomes coated with a tan or yellowish crust, making it look like it has been covered with honey.
•There can be small spots around the first spots, spreading outwards.
•Impetigo is usually itchy.
•The sore takes about 1 to 3 days to develop after contact with fluid or crusts from a sore.
•There is often superficial peeling on the edge.

Please note:

Impetigo is extremely contagious (infectious) and can be easily spread to other children and adults. Please ensure personal hygiene is maintained e.g. own towels, face cloths etc.

Try to prevent your child scratching the sores as much as possible, eg cover sores with a watertight dressing and cut your child’s fingernails.

Your child can go back to school, after 24 hours of treatment and when the sores are completely covered with dressings.
Continue medical treatment until all sores are healed.

The brain is a part of the body that requires plenty of fuel and oxygen in order to work efficiently.
In the task of learning,everyone needs to be feeding and treating their body well to maximise this process.

Your children should:

Eat every few hours to keep their blood sugar levels up.
Exercise daily
Try to relax a few minutes each day.
Sleep at least nine hours each night.
Drink plenty of water.
Eat a light lunch.

"Parents need not fear the new technologies", NSW Parents and Citizen Association president Dianne Giblin says.
“These technologies also offer greater opportunities for families to learn together. I urge parents to learn the technology as well so they can teach their kids the appropriate use of them including mobile phone and social networking sites," she says.

“The new technologies offer a more engaging way to learn and it's important to remember that it doesn't take away from learning. Kids are still going to learn the basics, but textbooks stagnate.”

What is WordTalk?

WordTalk is a free utility developed by Rod Macaulay from TASSCC in Aberdeen to add speech output to text in Microsoft Word documents. It can also be used to listen to different suggestions offered by the spellchecker.

WordTalk is a free text-to-speech plugin developed for use with all versions of Microsoft Word (from Word 97 upwards). It will speak the text of the document and will highlight it as it goes.

Children with Reading and writing difficulties often benefit from having text read aloud to them.
This could be a valuable resource for kids at home or at school.

HEAD LICE have unfortunately reared their ugly head again and are on the move.

Recently we have had a number of children having to be sent home because of this.

Please check your child’s hair and if necessary apply a suitable product to remove the lice.

Sometimes you may need to reapply the lotion two or even three times.

All eggs must be removed to successfully eradicate the lice.

We understand that it is a difficult and tiresome job to do but unless all the eggs are removed they can re-hatch over night.

Parents & Citizens Association meets
4th Monday of every month.

The next P&C meeting (the A.G.M.) is on

Monday 23rd November

at 7pm in the Staffroom.

Immediately following the A.G.M. (say 7.30pm), there will be an Ordinary Meeting. At this meeting will be discussion around significant changes to the operation of the P&C run school canteen.

Our school canteen may no longer be able to operate with a paid canteen supervisor. If so, the options will be to either (1) operate the canteen with volunteers, OR (2) close the canteen.

So if you and your friends are interested in giving the canteen a new start and are able to run it on a volunteer basis, come along to our next P&C meeting and talk about what you can or can’t do.

Any options (days/hours of operation, staffing, menu) will be considered because the alternative may have to be closure of the school canteen.

HOOK IN2 HOCKEY

If any child is interested in learning

the basic skills of hockey

there is a fun six week program to be held from

10th November to 15th December

from 5.00 – 6.00pm

at Marshall Fields, Coffs Harbour

(opposite Southern Cross Uni).

Suitable for children aged from 5 – 12 years.

Cost $30 and all participants will receive a stick, ball and shinpads or a t-shirt, bucket hat and a bag of hockey goodies.
